Abstract

991,240. Casting in shell moulds. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. April 17, 1964, No. 16103/64. Heading B3F. Casting apparatus comprises a moulding-box having a fixed upper part 10 and a movable lower part 11 carried on fluid actuating means 13. The lower portion 16 of a shell mould 15 is located in the lower part 11 of the mould box and is surrounded by a plurality of heaters 20. Disposed within the upper portion 22 of the shell mould is a block of metal 25 desired to be cast which is supported by a ceramic ring 24 on a metal disc 23. The upper part 10 of the moulding box is provided with a heating coil 26 and evacuating means 28. In operation the heaters 20 and coil 10 are energized and with the shell mould 15 and metal 25 in position, the two halves 10, 11 of the box are brought into sealing engagement by the fluid means 13 and the box is evacuated. The block of metal is melted and at a predetermined temperature, heat from the metal at the centre of the ceramic ring 24 melts the centre of the disc 23 which permits metal to flow into all parts of the heated mould 15. In alternative embodiment, the mould box may be filled with an inert gas instead of being evacuated. Also an alternative lower part of the mould box may be used in which a bed of sand is fluidized by compressed air to form the mould for casting.
