Abstract
210,394. Metal & Thermit Corporation, (Assignees of Begtrup, E. F.) Jan. 29, 1923, [Convention date]. Crucibles h a v e their tap - holes plugged by material which does not contaminate the contained metal and is preferably a material which can be incorporated in the said metal. In an application to hot liquid steel produced by the alumino-thermic process, the plugging means comprises a pin 1, Fig. 1, closing the tap-hole 2 of the crucible, a disc 4, and a body 7 of subdivided particles, all of which are preferably of simliar metal to that in the crucible. The metal may be tapped by striking the pin 1 so as to unseat it, but by properly apportioning the material 7, the crucible will automatically tap itself at a given time by the melting of the said material 7, under which conditions the pin 1 may be dispensed with. The disc 4 may be dispensed with if the head of the pin 1 is of sufficient size to close the tap-hole. In a further modification, a pin 9, Fig. 2 is employed alone and is of the same material as that within the crucible. The pin 9 may be adapted to be completely melted by the molten metal, or may be unseated, as described above.
