Abstract
211,039. Aktiebolaget Ferrolegeringar, (Assignees of Kalling, B. M. S., Andersson, O. G. S., and Danieli, S. D.). Feb. 14, 1923, [Convention date]. Alloys.-In a process for making alloys in an electric furnace containing molten slag, one end of a metal rod is immersed in the slag and a, current is passed therethrough whereby the end of the rod melts and becomes superheated, other metal being charged into the furnace in a solid or fluid form either before or during the supply of current to the rod, or when the supply is interrupted. Ferro-chromium is made in an electric furnace containing 1500 kg. of molten iron containing .03 per cent of carbon and covered with a molten slag composed of lime, chromium ore, and quartz, by immersing the end of an iron rod of carbon content 0.05 per cent in the slag and passing a current therethrough, 550 kg. of solid ferro-chromium containing 65 per cent of chromium and 0.07 per cent of carbon being gradually added. This gives a yield of 2¢ tons of alloy containing 14 per cent of chromium and less than 0.05 per cent of carbon. If desired, the rod may be of ferro-chromium and the charge of molten iron may be introduced during the melting or afterwards.
