Abstract

1,122,944. Induction heating. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 28 Jan., 1966, No. 3896/66. Addition to 875,592. Heading H5H. Materials which react with refractory materials at high temperatures are melted by r.f. heating as claimed in the parent Specification, in a container formed from two or more members and the material is either allowed to cool in the container or is extracted therefrom. Apparatus comprises a container formed by two hollow water-cooled members 10 of semicircular cross-section mounted in a silica or glass tube 14. A water-cooled Cu coil 22 which may be movable encircles this tube and is connected to a r.f. source. The ends of tube 14 are sealed by plates 15, 18 containing tubes 23, 24 through which the atmosphere can be controlled. The members 10 of Cu, Ag, Au, Al or silver plated Cu are placed close together without touching and are separated either by insulation or by nylon bolts passing through overlapping plates (17), Fig. 4 (not shown). Opposing surfaces of the members may be bent, Fig. 3 (not shown), to prevent radiation reaching the tube 14. Ni, Ti, Fe, Cr, Mo, W, U, Si and their carbides and oxides may be melted in vacuum or argon, preheating may be necessary. Continuous casting and the growth of monocrystals are referred to.
