Abstract

<PICT:0986129/C6-C7/1> A ladle for casting molten metal has a taphole at its base communicating with a transverse passage in which is a slidable push-rod, capable of initially closing the tap-hole. The rod is made of a material which just melts at the temperature of the molten metal to be contained; it may consist of metal to be alloyed therewith, or of alloying elements in a suitable container. To prevent premature discharge the rod is initially protected by a compacted layer of insulating material. As illustrated in Fig. 1, tap-hole 6 is initially closed by rod 9 sliding in passage 8. This type of tapping device is claimed to be particularly advantageous in that method of vacuum treatment wherein hermetically sealed to the base of the ladle is an evacuated chamber through which the metal is tapped.
