Abstract
A slide valve 17 for a casting ladle 10 having a discharge orifice 16 extending through a refractory outlet block 13, a bush 14 and a bottom plate 15, comprises a slidable member 19 of high conductivity refractory materal surrounded by a support block 23 of low conductivity refractory material. The low conductivity material minimizes heat leakage when the valve is in its closed position so preventing solidification of the metal occurring in the orifice region located above the slidable member 19. The slide valve, which is movable between open and closed positions by an hydraulic device 18, includes a collector nozzle 21 having inner and outer parts 21a, 21b. Preferably the nozzle interior is of diamond-shape cross-section (see Fig. 2). The various parts of the slide valve 17 are carried in a cast iron carriage 24 slidable on guides 25 within a valve housing 26. The bottom plate 15 and the nozzle inner part 21a are made of high conductivity refractory material whereas the bush 14 and the outer nozzle part 21b are of low conductivity material. The joints R which extend into contact with the molten metal are filled with highly refractory mortar e.g. magnesite whereas the joints T not in contact with molten metal are filled with porous fine clay mortar.
