Abstract

892,945. Ladles. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Aug. 19, 1959 [Aug. 29, 1958], No. 28404/59. Class 82(1). A teeming-nozzle valve for vacuum-casting apparatus in which molten metal is teemed through a nozzle 14 provides a downward orifice 19 in the bottom of a ladle 4 for flow into a casting mould 1 in an evacuated tank 3, the ladle bottom and the top 9 of the tank 3 having an air-tight connection 17 defining a space about the nozzle 14, and a stopper rod 15 for the nozzle 14 controlling the flow through the orifice 19, the valve of the teeming nozzle 14 comprising a valve assembly 18 at its lower end including a stationary valve part and a normallyclosed movable valve part 32, e.g. a stopper, within the space, the latter moving between open and closed positions, the assembly 18 providing a vacuum seal between the orifice 19 and tank 3, and the movable part 32 being actuated for opening by linkage 16. The stationary valve part comprises a metal plate 24, 27 with a port 25 in which the movable part 32 seats for closure, and is held in position by a mounting 28, 29 providing, with the closed movable valve part, the vacuum seal between the nozzle 14 and an opening 10 with a collar 11, for metal, in the tank 3. The ladle 4 may be of refractory-lined steel 13 and the nozzle 14 of refractory material, the mounting 28, 29 forming an air-tight connection with the steel 13 about the nozzle 14. The movable valve part 32 has an operating connection with the stopper rod 15, for opening when the rod 15 is operated to admit molten metal into the orifice 19, which may extend axially therein, secured between the rod's lower end and the movable valve part 32, which may comprise links 35, 36, arranged end-to-end with an articulated connection 38, 39 therebetween, so that the position of the link 36 in the orifice 19 may be aligned for seating the valve part 32. Other mechanisms for operating the valve part 32 independently of and prior to the rod 15 may be used.
