Abstract

808,145. Foundry ladles; steel refining. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDEKURGIE. July 4, 1956 [July 5, 1955], No. 20697/56. Classes 72 and 82(1) Gases, or gases carrying pulverulent material, are blown into molten metal in a ladle, without using a lance, by injecting the gas directly through a closable orifice in the base of the ladle. As shown in Fig. 1, the base of the ladle 2 is fitted with a frusto-conical refractory nozzle 1 which is closable by a refractory plug 3 carried by a high-tensile wire or a spring-urged rod 4 which can be released suddenly by removal of a key 6, the rod 4 passing through a small opening in a gas pipe connection 12, which opening is closable by a flap valve 14. The nozzle is secured in position by means of studs 11, keys 10, a plate 9 and a packing 20 of a plastic material such as thick pitch or aluminous cement. The nozzle may be made of graphite, chromite, chamotte, magnesia or highly aluminous refractories, and it may have a single central channel or a number of parallel, upwardly diverging or helically arranged channels which may be metal lined. A cover 21 may be provided. In the form shown in Fig. 7 the nozzle 1 is closed by a pad 15 carried by a rod 16 which passes through a slot 22 in a cover 21 carried by a fixed arm 23. The ladle may have a conical bottom with a central or eccentric opening, and the Specification describes modifications of the engaging surfaces of the nozzle and plug. The invention is stated to be particularly applicable to the desulphurization of liquor pig iron by injecting pulverulent lime in a current of nitrogen or other non-oxidizing gas.
