Abstract

1,153,117. Refining steel; alloying. BROWN FINTUBE CO. Feb.20, 1968 [Feb. 24, 1967], No. 8286/68. Heading C7D. Addition agent, e.g. Al as deoxidizer, lime, CaC 2 or alloying metal, is introduced into molten steel produced by an oxygen-blowing process in a movable converter by moving the converter 1 after the steel has been blown to a position in which steel can pour therefrom in a freely falling stream S e.g. into a ladle 3, and propelling a stream P of finely divided particles of addition agent into the stream S from a gun 6 fixed to the converter so that all particles strike the stream S at a velocity sufficient to penetrate it. The gun is fed with the particles, e.g. “-¢'' diameter and #-#'' thick Al particles, from a container e.g. hopper (8, Fig. 1) spaced from the converter to avoid adverse heat effects; a valve (16, Fig. 1) for controlling the discharge of particles from the gun is similarly located. Preferably compressed air is used to propel the particles. The addition agent may be introduced into the falling stream of molten metal whilst the converter is being tilted as shown.
