Abstract
1456977 Metallurgical converters USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 27 July 1973 [27 July 1972 24 Nov 1972] 35875/73 Heading F4B [Also in Division C7] Apparatus for refining iron by bottomblowing with a stream of gas in which a particulate additive may be suspended includes a gas supply system in which a valve controlling flow rate from the supply source is actuated in response to a flow sensor to compensate for variations resulting from introduction of the particulate material and to maintain a constant flow rate at the tuyere. Additionally a gas pressure sensor at the tuyere may be coupled to the control unit to ensure that the pressure is always adequate to prevent entry of metal into the tuyere. As particularly described, converter 10 is blown with streams of oxygen and a sheathing hydrocarbon gas, lime being dispensed into the oxygen stream when required from hoppers (48, 48<SP>1</SP>). Flow control valve 28 is actuated by control unit 54 which receives signals from flow meter 26 and pressure sensor 64, while the desired flow rate is set on potentiometer 60. A similar system 54<SP>1</SP> may be used to control the flow of nitrogen which replaces oxygen during certain stages of the cycle. The invention may also be applied to a converter additionally having tuyeres for side-blowing, to an arc or openhearth furnace, or to a mixer. The construction of the furnaces of Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 is identical with that in a case by the same Application which was only recently accepted.
