Abstract
1437534 Crucibles O PLETSCHER & T PLETSCHER [trading as Gebr PLETSCHER] 6 July 1973 [17 July 1972] 32319/73 Heading F4B A furnace for melting metals consists of a crucible 7 positioned in a compartment 1 formed by refractory walls 2 carrying heating elements 20, the crucible being surrounded by a metal pot 17 having an electrical contact 11 on its bottom plate so that any metal escaping through the crucible walls is caught by the pot and connects the contact to the body of the pot 17 thereby providing a signal to a monitoring circuit. The pot retains the molten metal if the crucible fails and prevents it damaging the heating elements. The crucible is heated through the pot, the outer surface of the pot being blackened to assist transfer of heat. The pot is heated by the transferred heat preventing any escaped metal solidifying on the contacts. The gap between the upper edges of the pot and the crucible is closed with a seal so as to provide a volume of static gas surrounding the crucible. This may be an inert gas. The bottom plate of the pot may slope down towards the contact, which is set in an insulator in the bottom plate.
