Abstract

1428220 Cupola furnace NETHERLANDS APPLIED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FOR INDUSTRY TRADE & COMMERCE 10 Aug 1973 [10 Aug 1972] 38033/73 Heading F4B A cupola furnace for preparing a metal (e.g. steel) melt comprises at least one gas or oil-fired burner 11 near the bottom of a superheating region 5 filled with lumps of coke or of a refractory material. In a combustion chamber 10 flames and hot gases from the burner circulate around a heat conductive wall 6 (e.g. of clay graphite) of the superheating region 5. The hot gases are guided by a helical portion 14, pass upwardly through channels 15 into a collecting box 16 and thence through holes 4 to melt a charge that has been fed into the furnace through a hole 3. The melted charge is superheated in the region 5 and can be tapped from the furnace at 9. The cupola shaft 1 is steel with a heat resistant lining 2. The burner 11 may be directed non- radially with respect to the wall 6. The contents of region 5 cannot burn because no air is fed to it.
