Abstract

Process for forming an alumina coating on a substrate by melt spraying and alumina source comprises flame spraying a mixt. of alumina and a small amt. of Al(alloy) or delta - type alumina onto a refractory surface of the substrate. Pref. 2-20 wt.% Al are mixed with the alumina (Al2O3) to form the alumina source. Partic. when delta -type alumina is used, it forms >80% of the total alumina. This gives wide application to use of alpha-Al2O3 as heat and corrosion-resistant coating for e.g. blast furnace tuyere inlets.
