Abstract

In a method of inhibiting the corrosion of copper and copper base alloys the copper surface is treated with a solution containing benzotriazole preferably in a concentration of 0.05% to saturation. Aqueous solutions containing 0.1-5% of benzotriazole maintained at 40-100 DEG C. are preferred but an organic solvent such as acetone, isopropanol or trichlorethylene may also be used. The solution may be applied to the copper surface by dipping, by means of absorbent pads or by injection of the solution as a mist. The benzotriazole treatment may also be incorporated in a degreasing operation or in processes which involves the use of corrosive lubricants the benzotriazole may be added to the lubricant. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 933,979.
