Abstract
A process for farming a protective coating of boehmite (AlOOH) on clean Al or Al alloy articles comprises treating the articles with aqueous solutions of an organic amine or amide having a pH of between 7.5 and 9.7. The solution may be at 75-100 DEG C. and may be applied by dipping or spraying. It may additionally contain an oxidizing substance, e.g. H2O2. Prior to treatment, the articles may be chemically or electrochemically polished and, after treatment, they may be heated at 100-300 DEG C. Preferred amines or amides are triethanolamine, (e.g. 0.002-0.3% w/w), mono- or di-ethanolamine, formamide or acetamide. Other specified amines are mono-, di- and trimethylamine, ethylene diamine, diethylamine and hexamethylene tetramine. Specified Al articles which may be treated are kitchen and camping equipment, wire, wire netting, rivets and screws. Swiss Specification 295,082 is referred to.
