Abstract

Lubricants for the protection of metal surfaces from atmospheric corrosion between processing stages and for protecting metal surfaces against mechanical damage and atmospheric corrosion (and for cooling the metal) during cold working, comprise aq. solns. contg. 1-30 wt. % of Na, K or ethanolamine salts of 5-9C fatty acids. Metal parts treated with the lubricants can be kept in a closed storage room for 2 6 months without corrosion. The lubricants do not have to be removed after cold working, e.g. before painting or lacquering. For intermediate corrosion protection, the aq. soln. pref. contains 1-10 (esp. 2-3) wt. % of the salt; for cold working, the aq. soln. pref. contains 10-30 (esp. 10-12) wt. % of the salt, pref. in combination with (a) 0.1-10% (based on the wt. of salt) of an ethanolamide of a 5-16C fatty acid, (b) 0.1-1% of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), or (c) 0.2-11 wt. % of a 1-10:1 mixt. of the fatty acid ethanolamide and CMC.
