Abstract

The acidic electrochemical corrosive effect upon a metal of an acid medium containing a corrosion inhibitor is reduced by having the metal in the medium simultaneously in contact with the inhibitor and elemental sulphur. The elemental sulphur may initially be incorporated in the medium or the metal may be treated with a sulphur solution before contacting it with the medium. In an alternative embodiment, organic or inorganic substances possessing the property of releasing elemental sulphur in the operating conditions are used instead of sulphur itself. The following inhibitors are mentioned:-long chain fatty acids, tetradecylamine, imidazolines, quaternary ammonium salts and organic sulphides and bisulphides. The examples relate to the treatment of steel in hydrochloric acid.
