Abstract

1,149,200. Passivating ferrous metal surfaces, preventing corrosion. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Oct. 19, 1966 [Oct. 24, 1965], No. 46816/66. Headings C7E and C7U. A process for the passivation of a ferrous metal surface comprises contacting it with an aqueous alkaline solution having an oxidation potential of 175-250 m. v. (measured between iron and saturated calomel electrodes) at a temperature of 37-8‹-90-5‹C. and containing Fe<SP>++</SP> or Fe<SP>+++</SP> salts of one or more amino carboxylic acid chelating agents. The solution may be formed in situ by reaction of an alkaline solution containing the chelating agent(s) with scale and oxide residues on the ferrous surface the oxidation potential being controlled by the addition of an oxidizing agent (e.g. oxygen, air, Na NO 2 or HNO 3 ). This reaction will also serve to remove any copper on the surface. Examples of suitable chelating agents, such as E. D. T. A. , are also given.
