Abstract

1,213,792. Inhibiting corrosion. DIVERSEY Ltd. Nov.20, 1967 [Nov. 30, 1966], No.53677/66. Heading C7E. Corrosion of metal, such as stainless steel, mild steel, aluminium, zinc or manganese, by acid such as phosphoric acid, sulphamic acid, H2 SO4 HCl or HNO3 is inhibited by treating it with iodine in the presence of the acid. The iodine may be aqueous or alcoholic solution, and may be accompanied by or combined with a surface-active agent, such as di-N substituted polyalkoxy condensates of tertiary amines or of amides, alkyl ether sulphates, nonyl phenol ethylene oxide condensates, ampholyticsurface-active agents, alkanolamines phosphate esters and alkylamines. The concentration of iodine in solution may be 0À0001 to 1À0% w/w and that of the surface-active agent 0À002 to 10% w/w. Iodine may be added to an acid bath, such as an H2 SO4 pickling bath used to remove oxide scale from steel, or to acid employed to descale the interior of ferrous metal vessels, and metal which is to be exposed to a corrosive atmosphere may be treated with iodine and acid.
