Abstract

A cold-rolled metal, e.g. steel, product is degreased in an alkaline solution containing sodium silicate and a sulphur-bearing substance such as thiourea. The degreased product is rinsed, coiled into closely packed turns, and subjected to heat treatment during which sulphur retaining by the product reacts with carbon migrating to the surface of the product to form a volatile compound. The treated product is suitable for coating with a metal.
