Abstract

Steel which is free of strong nitride-formers such as chromium, molybdenum and aluminium is given a uniformly distributed content of nitrogen by first heating it in a nitrogenizing atmosphere to produce a nitrogen-rich outer case, and then heating it to a temperature above its recrystallization temperature in a substantially non-nitrogenizing atmosphere to cause diffusion. Nitrogenizing may be carried out in an atmosphere of ammonia, possibly during heating to the final treatment temperature which may be at 1000-1350 DEG F. for 1/2 -\ba3/4 hour. The steel may be treated in the form of open coils.
