Abstract

Parts of a component, e.g. the teeth of a gear-wheel, are hardened by soft nitriding followed by induction hardening. The teeth may be preliminarily case hardened with carbon. The nitriding may be carried out in a bath for 1-3 hours or in ammonia gas for up to 10 hours at 500-600 DEG C. It is stated that the components so treated are resistant to distortion when in use.
