Abstract

1367687 Nitriding by glow discharge ELEKTROPHYSIKALISCHE ANSTALT BERNHARD BERGHAUS 3 Sept 1971 [8 Sept 1970] 41264/71 Heading C7U Iron or steel are surface hardened by glow discharge in an atmosphere of treatment gas, particularly nitrogen or a titanium compound, in at least two stages, treatment of part of the surface being suppressed by shielding during at least one stage, so that a hardening element is diffused to differing depths. As particularly applied to a valve plunger Fig. 1, the body is treated by glow discharge nitriding in a first stage with the regions 3, 4, 5, 6 protected by shields 26, 27, 28, 29 which may be spaced up to 0À5 mm. from the surface, the treatment being effected at above 500‹ C and particularly for 18 hours at 530‹ C. The outer sleeve 26 is then removed and treatment continued for 6 hours at 490‹ C. In a modified second stage the ring 28 shielding region 4 may also be removed, while the inner sleeve 27 may be partially withdrawn to allow nitriding of that part of the inner surface adjacent to the closed end and thereby minimize distortion. Further improvement may also be obtained by shortening the outer sleeve 26 during the first stage.
