Abstract

Steel is strengthened by heating it to a temperature e.g 900 DEG C. at which it is converted to austenite, case hardening it e.g. carburizing by packing in charcoal or heating in a carbon-containing atmosphere, cooling it to a temperature, e.g. 520 DEG C., sufficiently high for working and sufficiently rapidly to retain austenite, working the steel to the desired shape during cooling, and finally rapidly cooling, e.g. quenching, the shaped steel to convert to martensite.
