Abstract
A steel screw made from 35NCD 16 or 4NCD 16 Afnor standards (French Standards) material is hardened and tempered to obtain a VPN 420/460. The heat treatment may comprise air hardening after austenitization at 875-900 DEG C. followed by tempering at 500-520 DEG C. or an isothermic hardening operation followed by a cold treatment and subsequent tempering at 500-520 DEG C. After further machining the screw is finally sized by cold working using a controllerable unit assembly which circulates over its whole length (see Division B3). A satisfactory material may comprise 0.40% carbon, 4.20% nickel, 1.50% chrome, 0.60% molybdenum, 0.20% manganese, 0.20% silicon, remainder iron.
