Abstract

1,156,180. Carbonitriding. B. PRENOSIL. Dec. 22, 1966 [Jan. 21, 1966], No.57406/66. Heading C7U. In a low temperature (i. e. 550-750‹C. ), process for carbonitriding structural steel or cast iron so that the, on the main, constituent of the case is the epsilon carbonitride with or without oxygen in the form of isomorphous oxycarbonitride, the reactive medium comprises ammonia gas with one or more aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon or mixtures thereof (5-50% by volume of the hydrocarbon based on the ammonia present) which is diluted with 50-90% of a carrier gas of high nitrogen and low hydrogen content (e.g. exothermic gas containing at least 90% N 2 and from which CO 2 and H 2 O have been removed on commerical N 2 ). The above conditions give a dissociation of NH 3 of up to 60% at 550‹C. and up to 90% at 750‹C.
