Abstract

1320513 Boron nitride WACKER-CHEMITRONIC GES FUR ELEKTRONIK-GRUNDSTOFFE mbH 27 Aug 1970 [27 Aug 1969] 41294/70 Heading C1A Boron nitride is produced by the gas phase reaction of a boric acid ester of an alcohol containing 1-4 carbon atoms (e.g. trimethyl borate) with ammonia at 500‹ to 2500‹ C., the ester being conveyed to the reaction zone in a stream of inert gas (e.g. H 2 , N 2 or a rare gas). The reaction is preferably carried out with the exclusion of air and when carried out at 500‹ to 700‹ C. it may be followed by a tempering process at 800‹ C. in a stream of NH 3 or an inert gas. The boric acid ester may be used in admixture with the alcohol from which it has been prepared and may also contain some boron oxide. Small quantities of oxygen and oxygen containing gas or steam may be present during the reaction. Articles (e.g. a quartz boat) can be coated with boron nitride by placing them in the reactor.
