Abstract

1449924 Pack diffusion of chromium and vanadium INSTITUT FUR HARTEREITECHNIK 25 Jan 1974 [26 Jan 1973] 03701/74 Heading C7F The production of hard wear and corrosion resistant skins on the surface of ferrous materials is carried out by the simultaneous diffusion of chromium and vanadium by heating, for preferably 2-4 hours, in the presence of chromium and ferro vanadium optionally together with an actuator and a filler. The activator may be ammonium chloride, with an inert filler such as alumina. With ferrous materials of 0À6%C or more, a typical powder composition would be 50% Fe-V, 30% Cr 10% activator 10% filler. With base materials of 0À25-0À6%C, the ferro vanadium content would be 40% the chromium 40%. Treatment temperature is between 950-1200‹C, preferably 1100‹C for steel materials, 1050‹C for cast irons, resulting in 20-50Ám thick skins dependent on length of treatment. Where initial materials have less than 0À2%C, a preliminary carburization treatment is required to increase the content to 0À6% or more. Alternatively, simultaneous diffusion can be carried out in a vacuum of 10<SP>-3</SP> torr, although in this process, no actuator is required.
