Abstract

1495703 Nitriding ferrous metals GKN GROUP SERVICES Ltd 27 Feb 1975 [12 Dec 1973] 57516/73 Headings C7D and C7U Ferrous metal is nitrided in dissociated ammonia, whereby a nitride layer is formed, and is then heated in a reducing atmosphere for not more than 6 hours to remove at least 90% of the nitride layer without causing excessive softening of the treated surface. The preferred reducing atmosphere is hydrogen or a mixture of hydrogen with nitrogen or inert gas. Nitriding may be carried out at 480-560‹C for 16-72 hours.
