Abstract

1,191,122. Case-hardening iron or steel. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 27, 1968 [April 29, 1967], No. 19659/67. Headings C7A and C7U. Iron or steel containing at least 0À25% C, e.g. nodular cast iron or plain carbon or alloy steel for engine valve rockers, transmission gears or tools, is hardened by austenitizing it in a non- carburizing heating medium, e.g. a non-oxidizing atmosphere or neutral salt bath, then soaking it in a molten salt bath containing at least 5% alkali metal cyanate (calculated as NaCNO) at 700-770‹ C. for at least 3 minutes, prior to quenching e.g. in water or oil. The molten salt bath is preferably a carbonitriding bath comprising alkali metal cyanate, cyanide, carbonate and optionally chloride. For 0À9%C steels, a conventional carburizing atmosphere or salt bath containing alkali metal cyanide, but which is non-carburizing towards these steels, may be used for austenitizing. Examples are disclosed wherein discs of 0À9%C steel are austenitized in a NaCl + KCl bath at 800‹ C. for 10 minutes, then tranferred to a bath containing 26À1 or 23À0% NaCN and 13À7 or 11À3% NaCNO, balance alkali metal carbonate, at 730 or 750‹C. and holding therein for 10 minutes, prior to water quenching. Specification 1,185,640 is referred to.
