Abstract

1285260 Coating with nitrides or carbonitrides DEUTSCHE EDELSTAHLWERKE AG 18 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969] 54883/70 Heading C7F A body made from a metal carbide, e. g. W C and a metal binder, e. g. Fe, Co, Ni, Mo is coated with a nitride or carbonitride of one or more metals of Groups IVa to VIa of the Periodic Table. The coating may be deposited by heating the body to 800 to 1150 ‹C. in an atmosphere of a halide, e.g. titanium tetrachloride, nitrogen, hydrogen and possibly a hydrocarbon e. g. methane. The reaction may take place while the body is embedded in a powder mixture of metal nitrides or carbonitrides. Metal chlorides which are solid at room temperature may be dissolved in titanium chloride. The body may be first rotated in the powder mixture to rub off the sinter skin.
