Abstract

1425633 Coating cemented carbides CUTANIT Ltd 29 Jan 1973 [4 Feb 1972 21 July 1972] 4467/73 Heading C7F A cemented carbide substrate is coated with a first layer comprising a carbide or a carbon-rich carbonitride of a Group III to VI metal, and a second layer comprising a nitride or nitrogen-rich carbonitride of a Group III to VI metal. The metal is preferably Ti which may include up to 20% Fe, Co or Ni. The coating may be applied by sputtering, plasma spraying or gas plating in e.g. a mixture of Ti tetrachloride, methane, hydrogen and nitrogen. The substrate may be carburized prior to coating. The coating may include an intermediate carbonitride layer, and an outer TiC layer.
