Abstract

1332878 Metal nitride or carbonitride coatings DEUTSCHE EDELSTAHLWERKE AG 1 March 1972 [23 March 1971] 9658/72 Heading C7F A metal nitride coating is formed on a hard metal substrate by reacting with a gas mixture containing a metal halide, N 2 and H 2 with a N 2 /H 2 volume ratio of at least 3:1. A metal carbonitride coating is produced from a gas mixture containing metal halide, N 2 , H 2 and CH 4 with a N 2 /H 2 + CH 4 volume ratio of at least 3:1, a H 2 content of 0À8-0À99 parts and a CH 4 content of 0À2-0À01 parts. The coating may be a nitride or carbonitride of Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta or W, 3-50 microns thick and may be deposited at 950-1100‹ C at 50-800 torr. The high N 2 :H 2 ratio prevents formation of the eta phase in the hard metal.
