Abstract

1302842 Coating with carbides of Ti, Hf or Zr TEEG RESEARCH Inc 20 Jan 1970 [23 Jan 1969] 2726/70 Heading C7F [Also in Division F2] A friction element is formed by depositing a coating of a carbide of Ti, Hf or Zr on a substrate of e.g. steel, a light alloy, ceramic or carbon by decomposing a vapour comprising a mixture of hydrocarbon, e.g. methane, and a halide of Ti, Hf or Zr, e.g. titanium tetrachloride. Alternatively hydrogen and the halide may be used in the presence of carbon.
