Abstract

1,253,949. Coating with titanium carbide. ED DORRENBERG SOHNE. April 22, 1970 [May 14, 1969], No. 19379/70. Heading C7F. A substrate of e.g. steels, cermets, sintered carbides, alumina, graphite or quartz is coated with titanium carbide by heating to at least 700‹ C. in an atmosphere of a titanium halide, a hydrocarbon and an inert gas which is not hydrogen. The titanium halide may be formed in situ using titanium sponge or chips. The hydrocarbon may be benzene, toluene, decahydronaphthalene, methane, or methane dichloride propane or bromoform. The inert gas may be a rare gas, e.g. argon, nitrogen or methane tetrafluoride.
