Abstract

1384109 Magnetic iron oxide films INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 9 Aug 1972 [15 Sept 1971] 37127/72 Heading C1A A film of magnetic iron oxide is prepared by vapour depositing iron on to a substrate at a rate of from 2 to 50Š per second in an oxygen atmosphere at a pressure between 10<SP>-6</SP> and 10<SP>-4</SP> Torr. whereby as the iron is deposited on the substrate it reacts with the oxygen to form a film of magnetic iron oxide on the substrate. The substrate may be aluminium at a temperature of 20‹ to 220‹ C. and the rate of vapour deposition and oxygen atmosphere pressure may be selected to maximize the abrasion resistance of the film. The deposited film may be annealed at above 150‹ C. and the coated substrate used in the manufacture of magnetic storage discs.
