Abstract
1,264,093. Sintered hard metals. REDERI A.B. NORDSTJERNAN. Feb.6, 1970 [Feb.7, 1969], No.5855/70. Heading C7D. Sintered hard metals are produced from a powder mixture containing a binder metal and particles of at least one carbide of metals of Groups 4b or 5b and/or at least one nitride or boride of metals of Groups 4b, 5b or 6b coated with at least one carbide of V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo or W. The carbide of V, Nb or Ta is either Me 2 C or MeC x where X is < e.g. 0À75-0À85 and the structure is cubic. The carbide, boride or nitride particles are preferably coated by reduction of a gaseous halide of the metal with H 2 and a hydrocarbon. Alternatively the metal may first be deposited from the halide and then carbonized. The preferred binder metals are Fe, Ni, Co or the following alloys:- 5% Cr - 5% Mo - 0À5% C, balance Fe or Ni; 20% Cr - 5% W - 1% C, balance Co. Binder preferably forms 4-70% wt. Examples of the coated particles are TiC, TiB 2 , WB and TiN and the coating metal halide WCl 6 and TaCl 5 . Non- coated carbide particles e.g. WC, Mo 2 C, Cr 3 C 2 TiC/WC may also be added to the mixture prior to sintering.
