Abstract
1317956 Sintered refractory coatings G T E SYLVANIA Inc 27 May 1970 [28 May 1969] 25562/70 Headings C7A and C7D A metal substrate such as stainless steels, Ni or Co superalloys has a coating of the following composition by weight per cent: 14-80% Ni, 0À5-10% Cr, 0À2-5% B, 0À3-8% Si and 6-82% TiC. Optionally, the coating may also include 0À1-5% Ag. The coating is formed by applying a first layer of a slurry of an organic binder and solvent containing 6À5-30% Ni, 0À5-3À5% Cr, 0À2-2% B, 0À3-2À5% Si and 67-91% TiC. The layer is sintered at 1750-1900‹F. in an inert atmosphere, and isostatically compacted at 10,000-40,000 p. s.i. A second slurry containing 75-90% Ni, 4À6-11À5% Cr, 2À2-5À5% B and 3À2-8% Si is then applied and sintered in an inert atmosphere at 1780‹F. minimum. The weight ratio of TiC to ether metal components in the first slurry is 4:1 to 6:1 and the weight ratio of the first coating to the second coating is 1:5 to 5:1. The powders are preferably -325 mesh and may be added as separate powders as an alloy containing 86% Ni, 6À5% Cr, 3% B, 4À5% Si with the TiC added separately. The isostatic compaction is effected by sealing the coated substrate in a plastic bag.
