Abstract
1310381 Sintered infiltrated cemented carbides GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 7 April 1970 [16 April 1969] 16418/70 Heading C7D Cemented refractory metal carbides of groups IV, V and VI such as WC, TiC, TaC bonded with e. g. up to 20% volume Fe, Co or Ni are chemically or electro-chemically etched to remove at least part of the binder metal and then infiltrated with a different metal or alloy such as Cu, Ag, Au, Ni-Cr, Ni-Al, Co-Al, Co-Cr, Cu-Si or Ni or Co alloys with Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W. The conventionally sintered cemented carbide is leached in boiling HCl or H 2 SO 4 and then fired e. g. at 1100 C. in H 2 or a carburizing atmosphere. Infiltration is then effected in a reducing or carburizing atmosphere, the infiltrant preferably being saturated with the carbide e. g. WC prior to infiltration. Leaching may remove all the original binder or only a surface layer.
