Abstract

1316298 Sintered carbide composition DEUTSCHE EDELSTAHLWERKE AG 13 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 48636/70 Headings C7A and C7D Sintered composition comprises 10-75% TiC (of which up to 50% can be replaced by one or more other metal carbides) bonded by a steel matrix which contains 0À8-3À9% free graphite (based on the overall weight of the composition). A preferred composition comprises:- the balance, apart from impurities and incidental elements, being iron. The compositions may be made by heating pressings of the powder mixture at 80-100‹C/hr up to a sintering temperature of 1000‹ -1200‹ C, holding at temperature for at least 4 hours, cooling to 750-850‹ C at 30-50‹C/hr and then cooling to room temperature at 100-200‹C per hour. Various annealing treatments for the composites are disclosed between 550‹ C and 925‹ C or they may be oil quenched from 870-900‹ C and drawn at 200-240‹ C.
