Abstract

1344223 Al 2 O 3 coated cemented carbides GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 12 May 1972 [26 May 1971 17 Dec 1971] 22446/72 Heading ClA An aluminium halide vapour, water vapour and hydrogen are passed over a cemented carbide substrate at 900-1250‹ C., the weight ratio of H 2 O to H 2 being 0À025-2À0 to form a substantially fully dense coating consisting substantially of α Al 2 O 3 of 1-20 microns thickness. The halide is preferably the chloride and the H 2 O may be formed in situ by the reaction of H 2 and CO 2 . The resulting product has a rupture strength of 150,000 psi. The cemented carbides used comprise one or more transitional carbides of a metal of Groups IVb, Vb and VIb of the Periodic Table cemented by one or more matrix metals of the group iron, nickel and cobalt. An intermediate layer is formed between the substrate and the coating and is believed to be the aluminate of the matrix metal.
