Abstract

1321669 Coating with metals, Ni/Co base alloys E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 3 Aug 1970 [4 Aug 1969] 37425/70 Heading C7A and C7F A Ni or Co electroless plating solution contains a thallium salt e.g. chloride, sulphate, formate, carbonate or acetate to deposit 0À5 to 6 per cent by weight of thallium in the coating. The substrate may be Ni, Co, Fe, steel, Al, Zn, Pd, Pt, Cu, brass, Mn, Cr, Mo, W, Ti, Sn, Ag, carbon or graphite or ceramic or plastics which are first contacted with stannous and palladium chlorides. The reducing agents deposit P or B with the coating. The coating may be subsequently heated to 200 to 600‹C., to form Ni or Co borides or phosphides. Hard particles of e.g. aluminium oxide, carbides of Si, Cr, Ti, Ca or B, boron nitride, diamond dust, garnet, quartz, emery, and corundum, may be included in the coating. The substrate may be removed to leave the coating. The coating formed comprises 99À4 to 82% Ni and/or Co, 0À1 to 12 % B and/or P and from 0À5 to 6% Tl. Coated articles referred to are:- pistons, piston rings, bearing, hydraulic rams, shafts, chain-saw parts, drills, dies, reamers, punches, and abrasive articles.
