Abstract
A heat-treatable ferrous alloy containing 20 to 90% by volume of primary carbide grains based on tungsten carbide distributed in a steel matrix is formed by liquid phase sintering a compacted mixture of the powders, the carbon content of the steel matrix exceeding 0.5% by weight to inhibit formation of large grains of a secondary carbide phase. The steel matrix may be a carbon steel or alloy steel containing Cr, Mo, W, V, Co and up to 25% by weight of the tungsten carbide in the primary carbide may be replaced by Mo2C, Cr3C2, TiC and ZrC. In an example, a powder mixture containing by weight 62% WC of 5.05 micron size, 37.81% Fe of 20 micron size and 0.19% carbon (equivalent to 0.5% carbon in the matrix) or paraffin-wax was pressed at 15 tons p.s.i. sintered in vacuum at 1450 DEG C. and furnace-cooled from 1300 DEG C. The compact was annealed at 860 DEG C. Depending on the composition of the steel matrix the processing conditions are: pressure 3-30 tons p.s.i.; sintering 1275 DEG -1600 DEG C; annealing 900 DEG -1050 DEG C.; hardening 875 DEG -1290 DEG C. with quenching in air, oil or water. In an alternative method the primary carbide powder is compacted alone and sintered at 1000 DEG C. to 1600 DEG C. in vacuum or hot pressed. The porous carbide is then impregnated with the steel matrix under vacuum.
