Abstract

Tungsten carbide filler material in granular form for use in tubular electrodes is made by sintering a powder comprising one or more of tungsten carbide, tungsten and carbon and containing 4.3-4.8% carbon. Tungsten carbide powder is formed into granules, e.g. by rolling with a lubricant, pressing, centrifugation or by utilizing surface tension action, and sintered by heating to 1600-1700 DEG C. Alternatively the powder may be a mixture of tungsten with tungsten carbide or carbon, e.g. soot. 0.2-0.3% of metal from the 8th group of the Periodic System, e.g. cobalt, may be added. In a particular example 6450 gm. tungsten carbide, 2100 gm. tungsten and 20 gm. cobalt in powder form are mixed together and rolled with 5% paraffin wax to form granules. The granules are sintered by heating in a graphite tray at 1650 DEG C. for 45 minutes in an inert gas, e.g. hydrogen or nitrogen, or in vacuum.
