Abstract

714,560. Powder metallurgy. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Nov. 13, 1952, No. 28619/52. Class 83 (4). A method of making porous sintered metal articles of predetermined dimensions and density consists in heating a preformed plastic mass containing metal particles and a heatfugitive binder to a sintering temperature to volatilize said binder and, controlling the rate of volatilization by adjusting the flow of a current of protective gas in the heating zone. Suitable binders are thermally depolymerizable polyolefins such as polystyrene. In an example, 100 parts by weight of iron powder, 7 parts by weight of polystyrene and 5 parts of wax were shaped by injection moulding and sintered at 2100‹ F. in hydrogen, which was passed through the furnace at 1.5-10 ft./min. to produce a compact of 90-60 per cent of the full density of a solid iron compact. Alternatively, the compact may travel through a furnace having a temperature of 300‹ F. at one end and 2100‹ F. at the other, the heating rate being 15‹ F./min. The hydrogen atmosphere may be replaced by cracked ammonia. The constituency of the gas passed over the compacts may be analyzed and the rate increased if the volume of depolymerization products is in excess of 75 per cent. A quantity of vaporized binder may be added to the gas stream.
