Abstract

i.e. TiC based material, is prepared with the addition of metals of the ferrous group; addition is made by alloying of titanium and/or zirconium in proportions of 10 to 80% wt. with respect to the total metal content. In an example, 85% wt. of finely divided TiC is mixed with a finely pulverised alloy of 8% Ti, 5% Co, 1% Fe and 1% Cr.; the mixture is pressed into profiled parts, with the use of the usual organic-based binder, and the parts are sintered at a temp. of 1550 degrees C. for 60 mins. in a hydrogen atmosphere or in vacuo. The properties of the material may be varied and improved by adding, in addition to the metals of the ferrous group and to titanium and zirconium, metals of the sixth sub-group of the periodic system, e.g. W, Cr, and Mo in proportions up to 2-50% with respected to the total metal content. This gives, in particular, an increase in the resistance to shock and to vibrations.
