Abstract

Nickel base alloys having the following composition are strong and resistant to corrosion when exposed to temperatures of 600 DEG C.-900 DEG C. for long periods. Silicon 1.5-9.0 per cent.; aluminium alone or together with one or more of the following elements: zirconium, titanium, beryllium, niobium, magnesium, calcium, barium, vanadium, copper, boron and manganese 0.2-6.0 per cent., but so that the aluminium content is at least .1 per cent. The remainder of the alloy is nickel. One or more of the following elements may be included up to a total of 4.0 per cent., viz: cobalt, chromium, iron, molybdenum, tantalum, tungsten, silver and zinc. The alloy may be heat treated at 1000-1100 DEG C. for about two hours and quenched in oil or water. This may be followed by an ageing treatment at 500-600 DEG C. for 1-30 hours with quenching or cooling in air. Such alloys are particularly suitable for use for blades of turbines and for exhaust valves and other parts of internal combustion engines exposed to corrosive conditions at high temperatures. According to the Provisional Specification the silicon percentage may be from 1.25-12.
