Abstract
Aluminium base alloys, suitable for apparatus such as parts of high speed internal combustion engines, which are required to operate at 350 DEG C. to 425 DEG C., consist of 4.5-7.5 per cent. magnesium, 0.75-2.0 per cent. of nickel, 0.5-1.5 per cent. of manganese, iron and silicon together less than 0.7 per cent. and preferably less than 0.3 per cent., the remainder being aluminium. The alloy may also contain one or more of the following elements in total not exceeding 1.5 per cent. titanium, beryllium, niobium, boron, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, cerium, lead, molybdenum, silver, tantalum, tellurium, thallium, thorium, tin, tungsten, vanadium and zirconium. Preferably the alloy is given a low temperature heat treatment for 16-24 hours at 80 DEG C.-350 DEG C., which may be preceded by a solution treatment for 2-20 hours at 350 DEG C.-450 DEG C., after which the alloy may be quenched or cooled in air. The solution treatment may be used alone.
