Abstract
An aluminium alloy chill casting is formed of an alloy of the following composition: Zn 4-9 per cent, Mg 0.2-1 per cent, Cu 0.1-1.3 per cent, Fe 0.8-1.5 per cent, Si as an impurity up to 0.3 per cent, Al substantially the balance. The expression "Al substantially the balance" covers the inclusion in the alloys of grain refining elements such as 0.05-0.2 per cent Ti, 0.005-0.1 per cent B, 0.05-0.2 per cent each of Zr, W, Mo, Ta, Nb and V, and the so-called hardeners in the aluminium alloy art including 0.2-2 per cent each of Mn, Ni, Co, and Cr. The alloys can be brazed at a temperature of 1060 DEG C. and the chill castings may form a component of a brazed assembly. Specification 519,160 is referred to.
