Abstract

A method of reducing the horns formed during the processing of aluminium manganese alloys containing by weight 0.8 to 2% Mn, up to 1% Fe, up to 0.3% Si, up to 0.15% Cu, up to 1% Ti and the balance aluminium, comprises bringing the silicon content of the alloy to 0.2 to 0.4%, casting plates from the alloy and heating the cast plates for from 36 to 48 hours at 600 to 620 DEG C., shaping the plates into sheets after the heat treatment and without cooling to ambient temperature and carrying out a cold hammer-hardening operation after formation of the sheets. A tempering heat-treatment may form the final processing step and an intermediate tempering step may be carried out after shaping into sheets but before cold hammer hardening. Examples include heating the metal plate to 590-640 DEG C., rough shaping the plate at 500-530 DEG C. and hammer hardening it from 100-700%. The processing of the alloy sheets thus formed may comprise metal spinning or stamping.
